SoftBank is doubling down on physical AI. The Japanese conglomerate announced it will acquire ABB Group’s robotics division for $5.375 billion, marking one of the largest robotics acquisitions in recent years.

The deal is expected to close by mid-to-late 2026, pending regulatory approval
ABB’s robotics business employs 7,000 people and generated $2.3B in 2024 revenue, about 7% of ABB’s total
The division designs industrial robots for picking, cleaning, and painting tasks
SoftBank plans to integrate the unit with its SoftBank Robotics Group, launched in 2014
ABB Robotics head Sami Atiya will exit once the acquisition completes
