OPENAI & SAMSUNG

OpenAI has struck deals with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to supply high-bandwidth DRAM chips for the $500B Stargate AI infrastructure project, marking a major step in scaling its compute capacity.

The Details:

  • Samsung and SK Hynix will produce up to 900,000 high-bandwidth DRAM chips per month — doubling current global capacity

  • Agreements signed in Seoul with Sam Altman, South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung, Samsung’s Jay Y. Lee, and SK’s Chey Tae-won

  • Chips will power Stargate data centers, a $500B project led by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank in the U.S.

  • Samsung and SK will also integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI APIs into their operations

  • OpenAI is working with Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and SK Telecom on additional AI data centers outside Seoul

Why it matters:

This deal secures the memory backbone for OpenAI’s future infrastructure, reinforcing its rapid compute expansion while giving Samsung and SK a strategic foothold in the global AI race. It also deepens South Korea’s role as a critical player in next-gen AI supply chains.

OPENAI

OpenAI has officially launched Sora 2, its next-gen video & audio generation model, along with a standalone social-style app called Sora. The new model offers more realistic physics, synchronized sound, and user “cameos” inserted into generated videos.

The Details:

  • Sora 2 improves over its predecessor with better motion, realism, and audio–video sync

  • The Sora app offers a vertical feed (TikTok-like), remixing, and personalization, with comments, likes, and a “For You” algorithm

  • A “cameo” feature lets users insert themselves into AI videos by uploading a one-time video/audio capture for identity verification

  • Access begins as invite-only in the U.S. and Canada, with iOS first release. Free use is possible, but ChatGPT Pro subscribers get premium model access (Sora 2 Pro)

  • OpenAI is implementing copyright safeguards and attribution tools; it says it’s working with rights holders and privacy controls built in from the start

Why it matters:

Sora 2 marks a watershed moment in AI video: instead of just tools, OpenAI is launching a full social platform around generated content. It could redraw how video is created, shared, and consumed — but its success depends on trust, safety, and whether users accept AI videos made from text prompts.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic has appointed Rahul Patil, former Stripe CTO, as its new Chief Technical Officer. Patil takes over from co-founder Sam McCandlish, who is moving into a new role as Chief Architect focused on model training.

The Details:

  • Patil will oversee compute, infrastructure, inference, and core engineering operations at Anthropic

  • McCandlish, as Chief Architect, will lead pre-training and large-scale model training projects

  • Both will report directly to Anthropic president Daniela Amodei

  • The move comes as Anthropic faces strain from Claude’s rapid adoption, leading to new usage caps on Claude Code and Claude Opus

  • Patil brings 20+ years of engineering experience from Stripe, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft, with deep expertise in scaling infrastructure

  • Meta and OpenAI have committed hundreds of billions to infrastructure, putting pressure on Anthropic to optimize compute and power efficiency.

Why it matters:

Infrastructure is becoming the real battlefield in AI. With rivals scaling at unprecedented levels, Patil’s hire signals Anthropic’s intent to fortify Claude’s backbone and ensure it can scale globally while keeping costs and energy use under control.
