OpenAI has officially announced that it will retire GPT-4 from ChatGPT on April 30, replacing it entirely with its newer, faster model GPT-4o — though GPT-4 will still be available via API.
The Details:
GPT-4o, now the default model in ChatGPT, will fully replace GPT-4 in the app by the end of April.
GPT-4 will remain accessible for developers through OpenAI’s API but not for ChatGPT users directly.
OpenAI says GPT-4o outperforms GPT-4 in writing, coding, STEM, and general conversational quality.
GPT-4 originally launched in March 2023 and was OpenAI’s first multimodal model, capable of handling both text and images.
The model’s retirement comes amid legal controversies — including copyright lawsuits alleging GPT-4 was trained on unlicensed publisher content.
Why it matters:
GPT-4 was OpenAI’s most hyped model to date — but in under two years, it’s already being sunset in favor of more nimble successors. GPT-4o not only improves on GPT-4’s capabilities but represents OpenAI’s broader shift toward faster, cheaper, and more scalable AI. As new models like o4-mini and GPT-4.1 loom, this is just the beginning of a new generation of AI upgrades.

Netflix is partnering with OpenAI to roll out an AI-powered search feature that helps users find content with far more nuance — including mood-based queries and deeper personalization.
The Details:
The new AI search allows users to search beyond just genres or actor names — enabling queries like “something feel-good and funny but not too long.”
It’s currently in early testing for select users in Australia and New Zealand, and only on iOS devices.
Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed the test will expand to the U.S. “in the coming weeks and months,” though Android and web versions aren’t planned yet.
While Netflix already uses AI for recommendations, this marks its most ambitious integration of conversational AI for user interaction.
Netflix insists AI will support discovery, not replace creative talent — reaffirming CEO Ted Sarandos’ 2023 stance amid industry-wide concern about AI replacing writers or actors.
Why it matters:
This partnership brings OpenAI’s tech deeper into consumer entertainment — signaling that AI assistants may soon curate what we watch as easily as they summarize documents. For Netflix, smarter search isn’t just a convenience feature — it’s a retention strategy in a highly competitive streaming war.
SAFE SUPERINTELLIGENCE

Ilya Sutskever’s new AI venture, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), has reportedly raised another $2 billion in funding — pushing the startup’s valuation to $32 billion less than a year after its founding.
The Details:
SSI was founded by OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, alongside Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy.
The latest $2B round was reportedly led by Greenoaks, bringing total funding to $3B.
Sutskever left OpenAI in May 2024 after his role in an attempted boardroom coup against Sam Altman.
SSI says it has “one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence,” though the product is still under wraps.
The company’s website is currently just a placeholder, with no technical details or timelines disclosed.
Why it matters:
SSI’s $32B valuation — for a stealth startup with no product yet — shows how high the stakes (and hype) are in the race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). With safety-first messaging and massive backing, SSI positions itself as both a philosophical and competitive counterweight to OpenAI — and investors are clearly betting big on that vision.
