OpenAI has significantly reduced the cost of its GPT-5.6 models, making its latest AI lineup much cheaper for developers and businesses building AI applications.

The Details:

  • GPT-5.6 Luna is now 80% cheaper, with pricing dropping from $1 to $0.20 per million input tokens and from $6 to $1.20 per million output tokens.

  • GPT-5.6 Terra received a 20% price cut, now costing $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens.

  • GPT-5.6 Sol keeps the same pricing, but OpenAI introduced a new Fast mode that delivers up to 2.5x faster inference at twice the standard API price.

  • OpenAI also reduced Luna and Terra usage costs in Codex and ChatGPT Work, allowing subscribers to complete more tasks within the same usage limits.

  • The company says the cuts were made possible by efficiency improvements in GPT-5.6 and are intended to deliver more intelligence per dollar as enterprises become increasingly cost-conscious.

Why it matters:

AI competition is no longer driven by model performance alone. Pricing and cost efficiency are becoming just as important, making advanced AI more practical for production workloads and large-scale deployments.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA has joined a coalition of major U.S. technology companies urging policymakers to support open-weight AI, arguing that America's AI leadership depends on models developers can download, inspect, and build upon.

The Details:

  • NVIDIA is leading a coalition that includes Microsoft, Dell, AMD, Palantir, and other technology firms advocating for open-weight AI.

  • The group argues that open-weight models accelerate innovation, improve transparency, and strengthen national AI competitiveness.

  • They warn that restricting access to frontier models could slow research and leave AI development concentrated in a handful of companies.

  • The coalition is urging U.S. policymakers to back open AI development while maintaining appropriate safety and security safeguards.

  • The effort comes as governments worldwide debate how frontier AI models should be regulated and shared.

Why it matters:

The AI race is no longer just about building the best models. It's also about deciding who gets access to them. The outcome of this debate could shape how AI innovation unfolds for years to come.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, a new frontier model designed to deliver near Fable 5-level performance at a significantly lower cost for developers and enterprises.

The Details:

  • Claude Opus 5 delivers major improvements in coding, reasoning, computer use, and agentic workflows, making it Anthropic's new flagship production model.

  • On internal benchmarks, Opus 5 comes within 0.5% of Claude Fable 5 on coding while outperforming it on some computer-use tasks.

  • The model is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, roughly half the cost of Fable 5.

  • Anthropic says Opus 5 is optimized for enterprise applications, including software engineering, research, data analysis, and AI agents.

  • Claude Opus 5 is available today through the Claude app, Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Vertex AI.

Why it matters:

Anthropic is making frontier AI more affordable. By bringing near-top-tier performance at a much lower price, Opus 5 could become the default choice for businesses deploying AI at scale.
