OpenAI is officially rolling out GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini inside ChatGPT. The new models promise faster, more accurate performance, especially for software developers using AI to write or debug code.

The Details:

  • GPT-4.1 is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, while GPT-4.1 mini is available to both free and paid users.

  • GPT-4.1 excels at coding, instruction following, and performs faster than GPT-4o and OpenAI’s o-series models, according to internal benchmarks.

  • Despite performance gains, OpenAI says GPT-4.1 isn’t a frontier model and therefore doesn’t require a full safety report.

  • OpenAI has removed GPT-4.0 mini from ChatGPT and upgraded its internal safety reporting with a new public Safety Evaluations Hub.

  • The release comes alongside OpenAI’s near-finalization of a $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, a leading AI code tool.

Why it matters:

GPT-4.1 gives developers a faster, more capable assistant for debugging and writing code, just as competition heats up in AI tooling. With Windsurf’s acquisition on the horizon and Google upgrading Gemini’s GitHub features, OpenAI’s move strengthens its grip on AI-powered coding solutions while responding to demands for greater transparency.

DeepMind has unveiled AlphaEvolve, a breakthrough coding agent that autonomously evolves algorithms for infrastructure, science, and mathematics. The system uses Gemini models and evolutionary methods to push the limits of AI-assisted problem-solving.

The Details:

  • AlphaEvolve pairs Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro with evaluators to evolve high-performing codebases, not just individual functions.

  • It’s optimized infrastructure across Google, including a deployment in Borg that recovers 0.7% of global compute capacity continuously.

  • The agent improved TPU chip design, cutting redundant bits in a circuit, and sped up matrix multiplication and FlashAttention by 23% and 32.5% respectively.

  • AlphaEvolve made mathematical breakthroughs, including a new method to multiply 4×4 complex matrices and a kissing number solution in 11 dimensions.

  • DeepMind is planning early access for researchers and collecting interest via a registration form.

Why it matters:

AlphaEvolve shows how AI agents can autonomously generate and refine advanced algorithms beyond human reach. From chip design to deep math, it’s redefining what’s possible in AI-powered innovation. If deployed widely, AlphaEvolve could accelerate discovery and infrastructure optimization across industries.

PERPLEXITY & PAYPAL

Perplexity is bringing checkout to the chat window. In a move to stand out in the crowded AI space, the company is teaming up with PayPal to let U.S. users shop, book travel, and buy tickets without leaving the chat.

The Details:

  • Users will complete purchases in-chat using PayPal or Venmo, with PayPal handling processing, tracking, and fulfillment.

  • Perplexity first launched its shopping feature in 2023 for U.S. paid users, but this is the first time it supports one-click in-chat checkout.

  • PayPal’s passkey checkout enables autofill for billing, shipping, and authentication to reduce friction and fraud.

  • Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal have all recently launched AI-powered payment tools, racing to become default partners for “agentic commerce.”

  • The partnership arrives as Perplexity finalizes a $500M funding round at a $14B valuation, down from its initial $18B target.

Why it matters:

Perplexity is aiming to transform chat into a commerce engine. By embedding trusted payments into AI conversations, it reduces friction and makes discovery-to-purchase seamless. As Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal race to own the future of AI transactions, Perplexity’s early moves could shape how users shop with AI in the years ahead.

AI & TECH NEWS

OpenAI unveiled a new Safety Evaluations Hub to report how its models handle harmful content, jailbreaks, and hallucinations. Following criticism over rushed GPT-4o testing, the hub aims to boost transparency, community trust, and ongoing safety improvements.

Google upgraded its medical AI, AMIE, to analyze rashes, ECGs, and lab reports using Gemini 2.0 Flash. In tests with 105 virtual patients, it outperformed doctors in accuracy and communication. Still experimental, it shows the future of AI-powered healthcare.

Google is prepping new AI tools ahead of I/O 2025, including a developer coding assistant, Pinterest-style image search, and Gemini AI in Chrome and XR glasses. Gemini Live voice chat may also hit Chrome, as Google aims to outpace OpenAI and Apple.

Stability AI, with Arm, launched Stable Audio Open Small, an efficient AI model that generates stereo sound effects on smartphones in under 8 seconds. Trained on royalty-free music, it avoids copyright pitfalls but still lacks vocal realism and broad genre diversity

AWS and HUMAIN will invest $5B to build a Saudi-based AI Zone by 2026, boosting generative AI, cloud, and Arabic language models. With training for 100,000 Saudis—especially women, it’s a major step toward making the Kingdom a global AI leader.
