After years of closed development, OpenAI has launched two new open-weight AI reasoning models: gpt-oss-120B and gpt-oss-20B. Both are free to download on Hugging Face and come with Apache 2.0 licensing for commercial use.
The Details:
gpt-oss-120B runs on a single GPU, 20B on 16GB laptops
Outperforms Qwen and DeepSeek on Codeforces and HLE benchmarks
Trained with MoE and reinforcement learning for better efficiency
Can use tools like web search and Python code (text-only models)
Released without training data to avoid legal risk, unlike AI2 or Meta
Why it matters:
OpenAI is finally responding to pressure from the developer community, government, and China’s rising open-source labs. This move signals a broader shift to reclaim leadership in open AI infrastructure built on US values.
OPENAI
In a bold move to dominate the federal AI race, OpenAI has struck a deal with the US government to offer ChatGPT Enterprise to federal agencies for just $1 per agency for the first year.
The Details:
OpenAI signed a landmark deal with the US General Services Administration (GSA) to provide ChatGPT Enterprise access.
It joins Google and Anthropic as approved AI vendors on the federal Multiple Award Schedule (MAS).
The offer includes 60 days of unlimited access to OpenAI’s most advanced AI models.
Agencies will receive onboarding support through training resources and a dedicated government user community.
GSA officials say strict security protocols are under review to ensure sensitive agency data remains protected.
Why it matters:
This aggressive pricing helps OpenAI gain a strategic foothold in government workflows while aligning with the Trump administration’s AI-first agenda. It also sets a new bar for accessibility, putting pressure on rivals to match or lose ground.
ELEVENLABS
ElevenLabs has stepped into AI music creation with a new that lets users generate royalty-cleared music for commercial use, expanding its focus beyond voice cloning and translation.
The Details:
ElevenLabs’ new model allows users to generate AI-composed music, claimed to be safe for commercial licensing.
The company shared samples, including synthetic rap vocals that mimic the style of real artists like Kendrick Lamar.
This comes amid rising scrutiny, with companies like Suno and Udio currently facing lawsuits for training on copyrighted songs.
ElevenLabs has partnered with Merlin and Kobalt to license music for training, covering artists like Adele and Childish Gambino.
Kobalt says artists must opt in, and the deal offers new revenue streams with strong safeguards against misuse.
Why it matters:
As AI music generation heats up, ElevenLabs is entering a legally complex but lucrative space. Its licensing deals may help it avoid the legal pitfalls others are facing while offering a safer path forward for creators and rights holders.
