OpenAI has held early discussions with the Trump administration about granting the U.S. government a 5% ownership stake. 

CEO Sam Altman reportedly wants other leading U.S. AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, and Meta, to consider similar arrangements. 

The proposal is modeled after the Alaska Permanent Fund, which distributes investment returns to residents. 

The idea is intended to ensure Americans share in the economic gains created by frontier AI companies. 

Discussions are still in the early stages, and any deal would likely require congressional approval. 

The proposal comes as Washington increases scrutiny of AI companies ahead of OpenAI’s expected IPO.  

Microsoft is eliminating 4,800 roles, primarily across its commercial sales organization and Xbox division. 

Around 1,600 Xbox employees will be affected immediately, with further reductions planned as part of a broader gaming reset. 

The company says the restructuring is aimed at improving efficiency while it ramps up spending on AI infrastructure and cloud computing. 

Microsoft stressed that the eliminated roles are not being directly replaced by AI, despite its aggressive AI investments. 

The company is on track to spend a record $190 billion this year on AI infrastructure, data centers, and cloud expansion. 

The layoffs follow similar workforce reductions across the tech industry as companies redirect resources toward AI.
