META & OPENAI

Meta has poached 4 top OpenAI researchers for its superintelligence team, escalating tensions just days after Sam Altman accused Meta of offering $100 million bonuses to lure staff.
The Details:
Meta has hired Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, all formerly based in OpenAI’s Zurich office, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Meta also hired Trapit Bansal, a key contributor to OpenAI’s first AI reasoning model (o1), who previously worked with co-founder Ilya Sutskever on reinforcement learning.
These moves follow claims by Sam Altman that Meta has been trying to aggressively poach OpenAI talent with nine-figure offers.
Meta’s AGI-focused superintelligence team now includes former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and is reportedly trying to recruit top minds like Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross.
The company’s broader goal is to build powerful AI agents and frontier reasoning models to compete with offerings from OpenAI, Google, and DeepSeek.
Why it matters:
Meta’s aggressive recruitment signals its commitment to leading the AGI race. With top OpenAI talent now on board, the company could regain momentum in developing next-gen AI models.
META & PLAY AI

Meta is reportedly in talks to acquire voice cloning startup Play AI, as it pushes deeper into audio-based consumer AI experiences, according to Bloomberg.
The Details:
Meta is looking to acquire Play AI’s technology and hire some of its team, though terms of the deal are still undisclosed.
Play AI lets users clone voices for AI use cases like customer service and content creation.
The startup has raised $23.5 million from backers including 500 Startups, Kindred Ventures, Race Capital, and Soma Capital.
A potential acquisition would complement Meta’s current creative suite, which includes video editing and custom chatbot tools for creators.
By integrating voice cloning, Meta could enable richer AI-generated content across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
Why it matters:
Adding voice capabilities would make Meta’s AI tools far more immersive, especially for creators and businesses. With rivals like OpenAI and ElevenLabs advancing in voice AI, Meta needs to keep pace. Play AI’s tech could be the key to powering realistic AI audio experiences at scale.
