Google is under fire in Europe after a group of publishers filed an antitrust complaint over its AI Overviews. The group claims the feature is damaging their visibility, traffic, and revenue by replacing traditional search links with AI-generated summaries.
The Details:
The Independent Publishers Alliance filed an EU complaint on June 30, accusing Google of abusing its dominance in search
The group says Google’s AI Overviews use publisher content to generate summaries, displacing original links in search results
The complaint alleges publishers can’t opt out of being used for AI training without vanishing from search entirely
Foxglove Legal, Movement for an Open Web, and others backed the complaint, calling for urgent interim measures
Google says its AI features generate new search demand and send billions of clicks to websites daily

Google is bringing its customizable Gemini AI assistants, known as “Gems,” directly into the side panel of Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and more, giving users instant access to specialized chatbots without leaving their workspace.

Gems are now available in the side panel of Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail
Users can access both pre-made and custom Gems for tasks like copywriting, code generation, and sales pitches
Custom Gems can’t be created inside Workspace apps but can be built at gemini.google.com/gems/create
Users can upload files to give Gems task-specific context or use Google’s built-in templates
Features like file access and @-mentions are supported inside the panel
