SPACEX & xAI

Elon Musk has formally merged his space and AI ambitions. SpaceX has acquired xAI, creating what Bloomberg calls the world’s most valuable private company.

The Details:

  • SpaceX acquired xAI, valuing the combined entity at ~$1.25 trillion.

  • Elon Musk said the merger is aimed at building space-based data centers to power future AI systems.

  • Musk argues Earth-based AI data centers cannot meet future power and cooling demands without harming communities.

  • xAI is reportedly burning ~$1B per month, while SpaceX depends heavily on Starlink launches for revenue.

  • The strategy could lock in long-term satellite demand, reinforcing SpaceX’s launch business.

Why it matters:

This deal tightly links AI scale to space infrastructure. If Musk’s vision works, SpaceX becomes the backbone of next-gen AI compute. If it doesn’t, the merger concentrates risk across two already capital-intensive businesses.

NVIDIA & OPENAI

One of the most ambitious AI infrastructure deals ever announced is now effectively frozen, exposing cracks in how OpenAI plans to fund its future compute needs.

The Details:

  • Nvidia has paused talks on a proposed plan to invest up to $100B in OpenAI, tied to building 10 gigawatts of AI compute capacity.

  • The agreement, announced last September, was a nonbinding MOU and never progressed beyond early-stage discussions.

  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has privately raised concerns about OpenAI’s business discipline and rising competition from Google and Anthropic.

  • Nvidia will still participate in OpenAI’s broader equity raise, but Huang said the investment will be far smaller than $100B.

  • OpenAI remains on the hook for enormous compute commitments as it prepares for a potential IPO by late 2026..

Why it matters:

OpenAI’s growth depends on securing unprecedented amounts of compute. A stalled Nvidia megadeal weakens that narrative and highlights the risk of announcing headline-grabbing partnerships before terms are locked in.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic is going big, loud, and very public with its stance on ads in AI, using the world’s biggest stage to draw a sharp line between Claude and ChatGPT.

The Details:

  • Anthropic is airing its first-ever Super Bowl ads, directly contrasting Claude with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

  • The campaign tagline is blunt: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

  • Anthropic confirmed Claude will remain ad-free, with no sponsored answers or product placement influencing responses.

  • The company is running a 60-second pregame ad and a 30-second in-game spot, where ad slots are averaging around $8M.

  • The move comes weeks after OpenAI announced it would begin testing ads for free and ChatGPT Go users in the U.S.

Why it matters:

This signals a clear split in AI business models. While OpenAI leans toward advertising to help fund massive infrastructure spending, Anthropic is betting that trust, privacy, and subscriptions will matter more to users, especially in high-stakes and enterprise settings.

MORE AI & TECH NEWS

  • Alexa+, Amazon’s premium AI assistant, is now available to all U.S. users, priced at $19.99/month for non-Prime subscribers. Previously in early access, Alexa+ introduces enhanced agent capabilities and multitasking. While Prime members still access it for free, some users expressed concerns over being upgraded without clear consent.

  • Perplexity has launched a new “Advanced Deep Research” capability for Max-tier users, powered by Opus 4.5 and an agentic reasoning framework. It’s designed to outperform rivals in high-stakes research areas like law, science, and finance. Pro users will get phased access soon, while Max users benefit from extended limits immediately.

  • In partnership with the Allen Institute and HHMI, Anthropic is embedding Claude agents into real-world research workflows. These AI agents assist with lab logistics and data tasks—reducing bottlenecks and enabling scientists to move faster on discoveries. This marks a practical shift toward AI-driven productivity in science.

  • Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes is now available as a built-in tool inside ChatGPT. Users can scan suspicious links, emails, or phone numbers directly in the chat, using Malwarebytes’ real-time threat detection. The integration makes AI-based security advice more accessible for everyday users.

  • Moltbook, a social platform for AI agents, exposed over 1 million credentials and thousands of human emails due to basic access control failures. The site was built mostly by AI, with minimal human oversight, raising serious privacy concerns as more apps are auto-generated and scaled without proper review.

  • Overland AI secured a $100 million funding round to expand its fleet of off-road autonomous ground vehicles for the U.S. military. With backing from 8VC and Point72, the startup will accelerate production and deployment of AI-driven machines capable of operating in hostile terrain with minimal human input.

  • Anthropic announced that its AI assistant, Claude, will remain free of ads—countering a growing trend of monetizing chatbots through sponsored content. The company emphasized that removing ad incentives helps Claude provide unbiased, trustworthy responses, especially during personal or complex conversations.
