ANTHROPIC
In a landmark decision, a U.S. judge ruled that Anthropic’s use of copyrighted books to train its AI is protected by fair use, but its storage of pirated copies still breaks the law and will go to trial.
The Details:
Judge William Alsup said training Claude with copyrighted books was “exceedingly transformative” and qualifies as fair use.
However, storing 7 million pirated books in a “central library” was not protected and infringed on the authors’ copyrights.
Authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson filed the lawsuit, accusing Anthropic of using their books without consent.
The court set a trial for December to determine damages, which could reach up to $150,000 per work.
This is the first ruling on fair use in AI training, setting a major precedent for similar lawsuits against OpenAI, Meta, and others.
Why it matters:
The ruling strengthens fair use as a legal defense for AI companies but signals that handling of copyrighted data still has limits. Anthropic avoided one legal threat but now faces financial risk for its storage practices. The upcoming trial could reshape how AI firms collect and store training material.

Google DeepMind has launched Gemini Robotics On-Device, a new model that can control robots locally without an internet connection, bringing AI-powered automation closer to real-world deployment.
The Details:
Gemini Robotics On-Device builds on the earlier Gemini Robotics model and runs tasks directly on robots, no cloud required.
Developers can fine-tune robot behavior using natural language prompts, enabling faster, more adaptable control.
Google claims its model performs nearly as well as its cloud-based version and beats other on-device models, though it didn’t name competitors.
In demos, robots used the model to complete real-world tasks like unzipping bags, folding clothes, and even assembly on industrial belts.
Google also launched a Gemini Robotics SDK, allowing developers to teach robots new tasks via 50 to 100 demonstrations using the MuJoCo physics simulator.
Why it matters:
Running AI locally on robots is a major step toward safer, faster, and more private robotic systems in homes, factories, and more. With tech giants like Google, Nvidia, and Hugging Face pushing deeper into robotics, this signals a coming wave of general-purpose robot intelligence.
