OpenAI has signed a $38 billion agreement with Amazon Web Services to power its AI models using AWS data centers and Nvidia chips, marking a major milestone in its $1.4 trillion infrastructure expansion plan.

The Details:

  • OpenAI will access AWS data centers and hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs immediately

  • The deal supports model training and ChatGPT operations through Amazon’s AI-optimized clusters

  • OpenAI plans to build 30GW of compute capacity—enough to power 25M US homes

  • The agreement is part of a larger $1.4T AI infrastructure plan, including a $300B deal with Oracle

  • AWS CEO Matt Garman called the partnership key to supporting OpenAI’s next AI breakthroughs

Why it matters:

This is one of the largest AI infrastructure deals to date. It gives OpenAI the compute backbone needed for AGI-scale systems and signals how cloud giants like Amazon are becoming central to the future of AI development.

Microsoft just announced a massive $15.2B investment in the UAE. It’s also the first to receive U.S. approval to ship advanced Nvidia chips into the region.

The Details:

  • Total $15.2B investment through 2029, including $7.3B already spent since 2023

  • Deal includes first-ever U.S.-approved Nvidia chip shipments (A100, H100, H200) to the UAE under a special export license.

  • Chips will support AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source developers, and Microsoft itself.

  • $1.5B was invested into G42, the UAE’s sovereign AI firm; $4.6B+ spent on AI data center infrastructure.

  • Microsoft aims to train 1 million UAE residents by 2027 and establish Abu Dhabi as a regional AI hub.

Why it matters:

This move cements Microsoft’s AI presence in the Middle East, giving it geopolitical leverage while testing U.S. export control boundaries—particularly in a region with close China ties.

OPENAI

A major Japanese trade group has asked OpenAI to stop training its AI models on copyrighted content without permission, following widespread imitation of Studio Ghibli’s style through tools like ChatGPT and Sora.

The Details:

  • Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) sent a formal request to OpenAI last week

  • CODA represents major rights holders, including Studio Ghibli, known for “Spirited Away” and “Totoro”

  • The request cites unauthorized use of copyrighted styles in image and video generation tools

  • CODA argues Japan’s copyright law requires prior permission for training use, unlike U.S. fair use claims

  • Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary co-founder of Studio Ghibli and director of Spirited Away, has previously criticized AI art, calling it “an insult to life itself.

Why it matters:

This marks a growing international challenge to AI training norms. As cultural institutions push back, OpenAI and other model developers may face increasing legal and ethical pressure to seek licensing — especially in countries with stricter copyright protections like Japan.

PERPLEXITY

AI search engine Perplexity has inked a new content licensing deal with Getty Images, aiming to legitimize image use and improve attribution amid growing copyright scrutiny.

The Details:

  • Multi-year agreement allows Perplexity to use Getty images in its AI search and discovery tools

  • Getty was part of Perplexity’s earlier Publishers’ Program for ad revenue sharing

  • The deal is not a traditional lump-sum license, as Perplexity doesn’t train its own foundational models

  • Follows criticism over past use of Getty photos and alleged content plagiarism

  • Perplexity says the deal ensures image credits and links back to original sources

Why it matters:

This move helps Perplexity protect itself from copyright risks while improving transparency and visual search quality as AI products face increased legal and ethical pressure.
