OpenAI is officially turning on ads inside ChatGPT, marking a major shift in how the $500B AI giant plans to make money while keeping the free tier alive.

The Details:

  • OpenAI will start testing ads in the U.S. for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise stay ad-free

  • Ads will appear at the bottom of conversations and be related to the topic you’re chatting abou

  • Users can dismiss ads, see why they’re being shown, and turn off personalization

  • OpenAI says ads won’t influence answers and user data won’t be sold to advertisers

  • No ads will be shown to users under 18

Why it matters:

This is a big moment for OpenAI. Ads turn ChatGPT from a product into a platform with a real business engine. If AI becomes the front door to the internet, advertising inside conversations could reshape how brands reach customers and how people discover products, while pushing more users toward paid plans to avoid ads.

Elon Musk is turning his legal fight with OpenAI into one of the largest damages claims in tech history, asking for as much as $134 billion from OpenAI and Microsoft.

The Details:

  • The demand is tied to OpenAI’s current $500B valuation and Musk’s original $38M seed contribution in 2015

  • A financial expert says OpenAI captured $65.5B to $109.4B in wrongful gains, with Microsoft responsible for another $13.3B to $25.1B

  • Musk argues OpenAI abandoned its nonprofit mission and defrauded him as a founder

  • Microsoft owns roughly 27% of OpenAI and is named in the damages claim

  • OpenAI says Musk’s lawsuit is an attention grab ahead of the April trial

Why it matters:

This case isn’t really about the money. Musk already controls a $700B fortune. The lawsuit is a proxy battle over OpenAI’s identity, control, and future direction, with massive financial claims being used to pressure the company as the AI power struggle moves into the courtroom.
